UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital

It was mostly okay while I was there, but they decided to release me earlier than I said I was and no matter how many times I told them that if they released me I would relapse or off myself, and that the problem that caused me to be ther wouldn’t change, but I wasn’t listened to. I did relapse and make multiple attempts. But the funny thing is that I’m probably going back because it’s the only one near me. The staff was so sweet besides a few. One of the staff members literally yelled at me in my fragile state and sent me to my room where I kept banging my head on the wall and no one came to help. Please, go to a facility that’s better than this if you can.

My son was there for 6 days in March 2021 and gained confidence about fooling staff. It was a vacation in his words. He has technology addiction to unacceptable you tube material and staff gave him iPad and PlayStation to occupy him. All follow up services they recommended, they were able to completely screw up referrals. In end, they provided no useful service. Please don’t encourage filling out feedback as I did 2 months ago with same performance…useless place that does not deserve to be in business as they are incompetent at best.

Hands down, Western Psych is disturbing. You walk in with an emotional disturbance, sometimes to the point of trauma. You walk out with that and two other things as well, a diagnosis (label) and a med regimen. Congratulations, you are are now a return customer. Because now you have to continually purchase more meds via your insurance. And you are required to attend a so-called outpatient treatment program, at their discretion, fitting your assigned label. Ask any victim of this invalidating approach, and they will tell you that most people never get any long term solution as to what brought them in. Save yourself the trouble, and search scripture for the meaning of your suffering. It is a proven scientific fact that the best way to address someone suffering from trauma is to mention things that show validation and understanding, but never judgement. Resolve can be even worse at this, with sometimes tragic implications. Things like diagnoses, mood disorders, one-size-fits-all IOP programs, chemical imbalances, mental health treatment, and pushy med schedules do nothing but put you in a box. Or shall we say, part of the bottom line. Return on investment is essential for business, which shows why handing you a Bible upon entry would ever work for them. As a result, your traumatic disturbing thoughts are never validated and addressed. And you'll always come back for more treatment being that you are continually hurting more. What a clever way to increase revenue. A phrase, "let the buyer beware", comes into play here. Never let yourself become a return customer at UPMC or Western Psych. Close the deal instead. There exists a literary Masterpiece that is way cheaper, yet undeniably more profound. Seek out a copy before it's too late. They drink iced lattes, and we drink Maxwell House. Avoid WPIC at all costs.

Told me they would call me to tell me visiting hours etc. once they were moved to a room and they never did. They won’t even tell you info on where the patient is so that you can figure out the visiting hours cause it varies per floor , especially one that you’re the emergency contact for. They moved them to a different hospital and didn’t even tell the own patients them name of the hospital just the location. And they won’t even tell me where they were moved either. To top it off the patient called me crying saying they feel so alone and nobody had talked to them and they feel like they are getting no help. ITS NOT OK WHEN LOVED ONES ARE WORRIED AND CURIOUS ABOUT THEM GETTING THE BEST CARE BUT CANT EVEN KNOW IF THEY ARE.

i went here twice, actually. first time was absolutely amazing, the people and staff were great. :) they offer snacks, different forms of therapy (music, art) and have games. second time sort of helped. i found myself a tiny bit traumatized by the patients there but that’s not my problem, I’m just sensitive. I’m a little scared to go back now. i think i was just really lucky to have such positive patients around me the first time. although both times i was there, when i hit the 4-day mark, i could feel myself declining. not being outside for days drives me insane. the absolute worst part though was the wait. oh god, the wait. i was in the waiting room for 24 hours, and people before me were in there for 2 days. it’s uncontrollable, but it really does bring you down.

This is an overall excellent facility with a staff that will go way out of the way for you. Almost like summer camp. Unfortunately I did get the feeling that big pharma was pulling some strings and that I was misdiagnosed. Good people, good intentions, perhaps not the best of mehodolgy but I did feel safe and cared for here. BTW anyone drawing comparison to jail, I don't think they have ever been to one.

I was just escorted out of the WPIC emergency room because I wouldn't agree to take medications. No warning, no mutual discussion. Put out on the street with nothing. If you go to Western Psych, there's a chance you'll be labeled a pain in the but unless you do things there way. This has nothing to do with your best interest or helping you.

Inpatient or Residential Mental Health Treatment

Inpatient or residential mental health treatment. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive level of treatment, offering 24-hour care in a secure unit of a treatment facility or hospital. Residential treatment is a step down from inpatient treatment. While there is structure and some monitoring to treatment, the big difference between residential and inpatient treatment involves the setting in which it is carried out. While inpatient treatment is typically carried out in a treatment facility or hospital, residential treatment is usually carried out in more of a home-like environment.
