Sonora Behavioral Health Hospital
Review Text :

My son was recently admitted due to suicidal thoughts. He was in there a week and there was not much communication about his care other then discharge. The nurses do not communicate anything to the doctor. The case worker does not communicate with the doctor. No one communicates with anyone. The doctor does not care to communicate with the parents and is very ignorant for a psychologist. My son got better at hiding his issues, was able to cut himself very badly all over one of his arms while he was in their custody. They didn't do anything other than prescribe him antidepressants and then send him home with more issues and better ways of hiding them.

I was fed well while staying here. Also shout out to Bhts Al and Charles for doing a great job. Venus (aka nurse Ratchet) on the other hand was very rude she would not allow me to get another water cup or label my water cup very disturbing when covid is going around.

Absolutely horrible. They refused to switch my room when I felt unsafe with my roommate because it was “too much work”. On top of that they took my clothes to “wash” them and I never saw them again. No matter how many times I asked I never got them back. They were supposed to reimburse me and that never happened either. We kept calling for a doctors note to excuse my absences to no avail. Don’t bring your children here, it’s a prison like environment. The children would get scolded for laughing too loud (a lot of them were being treated of depression, shouldn’t laughing be something to praise?) Most of the reviews are from parents or staff themselves and shouldn’t be trusted. Listen to the voices of those who were actually here to experience it.

The staff is wonderful, so are the doctors. I’ve been a nurse here for a little over 3 months and we do everything we can for our patients to help them heal from whatever mental diseases they are suffering from. Great place for patients and great place to work! We all try to make it a great experience for our patients.

What can I say about Sonora? * High Energy * Stressful * Team players * Compassionate * kindness * Professionalism * Motivational * Inspiring It’s disheartening to read negative reviews, so I chose to post a positive one. I am happy to be a behavioral health worker at Sonora. Working in a level 1 hospital is not for everyone. It takes a special individual to walk through the front door each day. The employee at Sonora faces challenges at every level. In all the reviews I have read I heard nothing about the mental health of employees. We go into work everyday and give it are all! We are there for our patients and meet them where they are. And Sometimes they are not in a good place. They need our guidance and support as they get better. We make difficult, but always safe and compassionate decisions regarding the patients in our care. We struggle to have a good work and life balance, and are dedicated to the mission of helping and advocating for the patient even when those closest to them challenge us. I am happy to be a part of the Sonora team. I have seen significant changes in the last year. Improvements, quality control, and departments running smoothly and efficiently . There are always going to be the five percent of any organization that are negative and miserable. I choose to move forward. Thank you Sonora for all you do for patients and employees.

Overall this is one of the better treatment centers in Tucson. There is one nurse there that’s extremely rude to patients and looks down on them. She is obviously rude to the patients where other staff will give her looks taken aback when she does it. Other than that it was a nice place with food that’s actually not to bad for hospital food. All the other staff were very nice and professional.

I'm very surprised to see some of the bad reviews, I just got home two days ago from a 6-day stay at Sonora and it was literally the best inpatient facility I've ever been to. I've had some horrible experiences with inpatient mental hospitals, but this place was wonderful. I wouldn't say every staff member was great, but none were outright rude (well, not to me, I did see some 'rudeness' towards the violent or combative patients but I'm not sure I would call it true rudeness more just down-to-business attitude...). Most of the staff was very helpful and the med nurses seemed genuinely knowledgable about the meds they were giving me. Unlike certain other inpatient facilities I've been to, Sonora actually had consistent scheduled groups every day complete with skill-learning and anger management and even a nutrition group. And despite being a 'Level 1' facility I feel I was treated with more respect and individualism than many other places, there was a comfortable level of freedom allowed as long as you follow the rules (instead of, for example, being strictly confined to your room between certain hours like some places do). They have a phone available for patient use during the day and I was able to keep in touch with my mom which was very important to me. More importantly, I felt safe there. There were a few potentially-violent patients in the unit I was in, but the staff was always on top of things and if there was yelling I could always remove myself to my room. I never felt forced to stay in uncomfortable situations (even when it came to groups, when a particularly triggering topic came up I was able to leave the group with no issue). I also must mention the cafeteria food, seriously the best 'hospital food' I've ever had. A lot of variety, including different options for vegan/gluten-free/etc diets. Good food that never tasted over-processed or like the stereotypical school-cafeteria food for instance.

The staff helped my son during a crisis and laps in care from his regular providers. However, coordinating discharge was a mess (as it is everytime). Each party involved just blames the other saying "we called to do this and they didn't do that". It's the same story every time my son has had to go into the hospital. I do not understand why its such a pain since this is their job and it's nothing new. How is it possible to not have a smooth transition, this only causes more stress to the family and child. We all know there are very simple things that need to be done to get a discharge. I'm aware every provider is different with their policy but lord have that available as the case manager so you know what to expect. Would it really kill them to call with updates, why do I have to call and play the transfer game?

Had a friend that stayed here a years ago. From what I was told the staff were lazy, they tried to force drugs on you so you’d be docile, they try to keep people here for as long as insurance will allow it. They really don’t want you to get better as they are for profit. From what I was told the majority of the patients in the unit felt worse after coming to Sonora and in some cases became worse while there with the business taking advantage of them. The staff will use an excuse to try to keep you with them longer.

I was here recently and it was ok, but definitely not like the last time a few years ago. The time I was here before, I had a really helpful social worker named Stephanie who was great. The reason why I remember her name is because I named my daughter after her because it's a great name! ☺ Anyways, she's not there anymore and I liked the way she cared about patients, like me. This time around, the experience was ok, but it was better the first time.

Inpatient or Residential Mental Health Treatment
Inpatient Mental Health | Mental Health
Inpatient or residential mental health treatment. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive level of treatment, offering 24-hour care in a secure unit of a treatment facility or hospital. Residential treatment is a step down from inpatient treatment. While there is structure and some monitoring to treatment, the big difference between residential and inpatient treatment involves the setting in which it is carried out. While inpatient treatment is typically carried out in a treatment facility or hospital, residential treatment is usually carried out in more of a home-like environment.
