Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Facility
Review Text :

I went to Mohawk Valley in 2016 due to suicidal ideation and double depression that wasn't getting better. I promised my NP that I would go to the hospital it these thoughts recurred, and when they did, I went. It was the first place that would take me after 3 days waiting at my local hospital, and I stay there for 2 weeks, which seemed to be the minimum. Some of the people in my ward had been there for months. My first experience upon entering the building was the sounds of one girl screaming and sobbing, a great start. That night, I spent two hours crying in the hallway, and none of the staff seemed to care. I got more sympathy from the girls in my ward the next day, as I had naturally kept them up with my wailing. Pencils weren't allowed, because 7 years prior a patient had stabbed a staff member in the face. Pens were allowed, so it seemed like a strange rule. Peer pressure seemed to be a tactic they used to discipline the entire ward, punishing everyone if one patient broke a rule. These rules could range from stealing dining utensils, which I understand, to *taking too long in the bathroom*, which seems unreasonable. One patient who didn't bend to peer pressure would often result in the punishment of the entire ward. There was apparently a psychiatrist and ward manager who was supposed to speak to the patients once a week. None of the patients even knew this, even those who had stayed for months. There was mold in the showers. Despite my ward housing exclusively females aged 13-18, the ward didn't supply feminine hygiene products, and would have to take them from another patient with their permission. A lack of supervision meant some patients would steal others' clothing in the morning. I watched a 13 year old, clearly disturbed girl get tackled and pinned down by 5 full grown adults and injected with 3 tranquilizers. There were very, very few opportunities to be away from the other patients for a moment of solitude. Not away from staff, I understand the refusal to let patients out of staff sight. Other patients. The soft room was the only real opportunity, as our bedrooms were off limits during the day, and if someone was already in there, there was no other reprieve. My school never provided my coursework to the hospital, and as such, during class times I wasn't able to do anything. They repeatedly put a patient with extreme abandonment issues and separation anxiety with a roommate, all of whom would leave long before her, making her issues worse. The thermometer repeatedly said I was suffering from extreme hypothermia. Naturally, I was not. One staff member seemed eager to provoke the patients. I was once yelled at for trying to give a girl a picture because she was laying down for the night. I had instead offered to give it to the nurse, this patient requiring 24/7 supervision and so being watched while she slept, and got yelled at. The best thing I can say about this experience is that after my 2 weeks there, I was so happy to leave my mood had improved greatly. I do not think being the greater of two evils should be treated as an effective treatment.

i went there myself, this was during covid so it wasn’t as fun as usual. i loved most of the workers there. morning staff is more fun in my opinion, some of the might staff is awesome too. the food is not the best but the good part is, is that your family can bring you snacks. there was also this girl that i met there, she was so nice and so sweet. we only knew each other for just over a week and we got so close. i really miss her tons. even tho we couldn’t share rooms, we spent most of the day in the dayroom and that’s where we got super close. we would talk all day. we were so sad when we found out i was leaving so we traded notebooks for a night and wrote each other a note. i will forever keep the note she gave me. it means so much to me. if you or any of your close friends or family goes there, it is a great place. i’ve heard about other places but this is the only one i went to (thankfully) and some the staff was super nice and sweet, others not so much. richie is my favorite guy there. i miss him so much. he got me through so much and i would do anything to talk to him again. he was like a brother to me. his daughter works there too, she is also super nice and sweet. i miss you guys so much and hope i get to talk to you soon❤️.

They were happy to allow me to stay in hospitality cottage for as long is I needed to visit my neice. Having a place like this for children's and there families was so helpful. The staff was helpful and understanding.

I experienced allot at that place, I got to meet new people and new staff, to me with my experience, you should go, it's very helpful, except for the weekends, they're boring as hell, but on the other hand, you can get allot help that you need from this place, you'll also have fun, with other kids, not unless you don't make it fun, it's not all that bad, like they told me when it was my first day there, I met allot of cool people, and most if them wanted to help me, I was cool with everyone in that place. What I'm saying is that, if you need help, physically or mentally, then call them and they can give you the help that you need. And the faster you cooperate, the faster you can get out of there.

Inpatient or Residential Mental Health Treatment
Inpatient Mental Health | Mental Health
Inpatient or residential mental health treatment. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive level of treatment, offering 24-hour care in a secure unit of a treatment facility or hospital. Residential treatment is a step down from inpatient treatment. While there is structure and some monitoring to treatment, the big difference between residential and inpatient treatment involves the setting in which it is carried out. While inpatient treatment is typically carried out in a treatment facility or hospital, residential treatment is usually carried out in more of a home-like environment.
