Meadows Psychiatric Center (Bellefonte, PA)
Review Text :

A family member was there this month. Went in 2 weeks ago with mood issues and signed a 72. Within a day or two the issues resolved which is normal for these kinds of illnesses, but the doctor refused the 72 and chose to hold the patient for several more days. No contact was made with the family regarding the reason why. This place is operated by IHS, a FOR-PROFIT company. They make more money by keeping you longer and keeping costs down. Tried to call my family member regarding urgent issues and was regularly told that their wing wasn’t accepting calls, if anyone answered the phone at all. Phone time has to be scheduled in 10 minute blocks a day in advance so good luck getting a hold of your loved ones. Didn’t hear anything from the doctor at all and only heard from someone who didn’t identify their role a day before the unexplained delayed discharge to “notify” us of the discharge the next day- no communication of detailed treatment plan, summary of services provided, anything. After over a week of inpatient care, we were spoken to for less than a minute and a half. Mental illness runs in my family so for better or worse we are familiar with the mental health system, and this place was beyond the pale to deal with. Truly a nightmare.

Inpatient or residential mental health treatment. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive level of treatment, offering 24-hour care in a secure unit of a treatment facility or hospital. Residential treatment is a step down from inpatient treatment. While there is structure and some monitoring to treatment, the big difference between residential and inpatient treatment involves the setting in which it is carried out. While inpatient treatment is typically carried out in a treatment facility or hospital, residential treatment is usually carried out in more of a home-like environment.
