$18.7 Million Gift Will Expand Treatment Center for Eating Disorders

The Park Nicollet Foundation in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, has announced an $18.7 million gift from former board member Ken Melrose in support of expanded comprehensive care for eating disorders.

The gift will establish the Kendrick B. Melrose Leadership and Excellence Endowment Fund and support expansion and growth projects at Park Nicollet Health ServicesMelrose Center, which provides residential care, family-based therapy, and specialized programs for eating disorders. The center, which Melrose helped establish ten years ago with a $10 million gift, served thirty-three patients at five locations across the Twin Cities region in 2018 and has seen a 24 percent increase since 2015 in patients seeking treatment.

According to the foundation, eating disorders are often underdiagnosed and undertreated — experts estimate that only one in ten patients with an eating disorder receives treatment — and lead to death at one of the highest rates of any mental illness.
